Eyelid Surgery in Houston, TX
A blepharoplasty is commonly known as eyelid surgery. It can be both a cosmetic and functional procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids and also to help improve any visual field obstruction that droopy eyelids can cause. There are two general categories of blepharoplasty—upper eyelid blepharoplasty and lower eyelid blepharoplasty. The goals of each are to address changes related to aging to rejuvenate the eye, improve vision and restore a youthful appearance.
Benefits
A blepharoplasty can improve your eyelid appearance, restore a youthful appearance, decrease sagging skin, reduce puffiness or bagginess around the eye and improve your vision.
Treatment Areas
The areas of treatment include the upper eyelid and lower eyelid. At times, we will also recommend doing a brow lift as it can sometimes drop more after the redundant upper eyelid skin is removed.
Surgery/Treatment Process
An upper eyelid blepharoplasty may sometimes be done under local anesthesia but often it is done under general anesthesia as there are other procedures we are doing simultaneously. In an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, an incision is made and the excess skin, fat are removed. Sometimes deeper dissection into the muscle layers of the eye will need to be done to correct ptosis or other causes of droopy eyelid. In a lower eyelid blepharoplasty, an incision is typically made on the inner eyelid and fat is either removed or repositioned. In some cases, redundant skin will need to be removed externally, if this is the case, excess skin will be trimmed as well to reduce sagging and wrinkles.
Am I a Candidate
We recommend coming in for an in person consultation to determine if you are a candidate for surgery. Sometimes, we will also recommend an evaluation by an ophthalmologist to evaluate your visual fields and to assess for dryness of the eye. In some cases, droopy eyelids could be due to an underlying medical or neurological condition which will require evaluation by a neurologist or further workup.
Recovery Process/Downtime
Recovery will vary based on the type of procedure done but most people can return to normal activities in 7-10 days. You will continue to notice improvement over the next weeks and months following surgery.
How Long do Results Last
Results can generally last up to 10 years but there will be variation based on your skin type, degree of aging, your individual aging process and lifestyle.
Cost
The cost of a blepharoplasty will vary based on type performed and how many adjunctive procedures are performed. We recommend an in person consultation to discuss your individualized treatment plan and goals of rejuvenation.
Risk/Side Effects
There are risks to blepharoplasty just as there are risks to any surgical procedure. These include bleeding, infection, dry eyes, bruising, swelling, discomfort, scarring, visual changes, asymmetry or difficulty closing the eyes following the surgery. We recommend a consultation to discuss these risks preoperatively to help you make an informed decision.
