Li Xiong, MD

Biography

Li Xiong, MD, is an assistant professor of pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and a pediatric cardiologist at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. She specializes in advanced non-invasive cardiac imaging, including echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography (CT), and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with a particular focus on the diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease.

Dr. Xiong earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biological Chemistry, cum laude, from Wellesley College before receiving her Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital, followed by fellowships in pediatric cardiology and advanced non-invasive imaging at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

Since joining the faculty at UTHealth Houston in 2020, Dr. Xiong has become a leader in pediatric cardiac imaging and medical education. She serves as the Pediatric Cardiology Division Medical Student Clerkship and Residency Rotation Director and Faculty Orientation Lead. She has developed innovative educational programs for fellows, including a comprehensive simulation curriculum and advanced imaging lecture series, and has been recognized with the McGovern Medical School Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award in both 2022 and 2024.

Dr. Xiong is actively involved in clinical research focused on congenital heart disease, pediatric cardiac imaging, and outcomes of transcatheter interventions in neonates. She has authored peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and national presentations on topics including coronary artery anomalies, anomalous pulmonary venous connections, and advanced cardiac imaging techniques. Her current research includes multicenter studies evaluating pediatric cardiac CT normative data, cardiac MRI findings following COVID-19-related myocarditis, and simulation-based education in pediatric cardiology training.

Through her dedication to patient care, education, and innovation, Dr. Xiong is committed to advancing the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired heart disease in children while training the next generation of pediatric cardiologists.
