Luis A. Ochoa, MD

Biography

Luis A. Ochoa, MD, is a clinical associate professor of pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and serves as medical co-director of the Pediatric Electrophysiology and Electrophysiology Laboratory at the Children’s Heart Institute. He is also the medical director of the Children’s Heart Institute Exercise Laboratory and assistant fellowship program director, where he plays a key role in advancing clinical care, education, and research in pediatric and congenital electrophysiology.

Dr. Ochoa earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell College before receiving his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Iowa. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of Colorado Children’s Hospital, followed by fellowship training in pediatric cardiology at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and a subspecialty fellowship in pediatric electrophysiology at Duke University Children’s Hospital. He is board certified in Pediatrics, Pediatric Cardiology, and Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

Prior to joining UTHealth Houston in 2022, Dr. Ochoa served on the faculty at the University of Iowa, where he established the Adult Congenital Electrophysiology Clinic and held leadership positions including director of the Pediatric Cardiology Exercise and Holter Laboratory and medical director of pediatric electrophysiology. He also helped lead efforts that resulted in Adult Congenital Heart Association hospital accreditation.

Dr. Ochoa specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders in children and adults with congenital heart disease. His clinical expertise includes catheter ablation, pacemaker and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator management, inherited arrhythmia syndromes, supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias, and electrophysiologic care for patients with complex congenital heart disease.

An accomplished educator, Dr. Ochoa has developed and led educational programs for medical students, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and practicing physicians throughout his career. His dedication to teaching has been recognized with the McGovern Medical School Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award in 2024 and the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Teacher of the Year Award in 2025.

Dr. Ochoa’s scholarly work focuses on pediatric and congenital electrophysiology, cardiac pacing, inherited arrhythmia syndromes, and outcomes research. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and national presentations addressing arrhythmia management, congenital heart disease, pacing strategies, and electrophysiology interventions in pediatric populations. His research has contributed to multicenter studies that continue to shape best practices in pediatric and congenital heart rhythm management.

Through his commitment to innovation, mentorship, and patient-centered care, Dr. Ochoa is dedicated to improving outcomes for children and adults living with congenital heart disease and cardiac rhythm disorders while training the next generation of pediatric cardiologists and electrophysiologists.
