Melissa Kwan, MD, FAAP

Biography

Melissa Kwan, MD, FAAP, is a board-certified pediatric hospitalist and injury-prevention advocate. She practices as assistant professor and director of community pediatric hospital medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, and provides inpatient care at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital as well as Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. Dr. Kwan delivers evidence-based, family-centered care to children with a wide range of acute, chronic, and complex medical conditions, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to promote patient safety and well-being.

Dr. Kwan earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed her pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins University. She is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine, licensed in Texas, and holds pediatric advanced life support credentials.

Dr. Kwan is recognized for her leadership in injury prevention and health advocacy. She serves as director of community pediatric hospital medicine and co-principal investigator for the Injury Free Coalition for Kids at UTHealth Houston and Safe States. In 2024, the Texas Pediatric Society honored her as Early Career Physician of the Year for her outstanding contributions to child safety and community health. She has appeared in media outlets like FOX 26 News to educate parents about toy and home safety during the holidays and drowning prevention in the summer.

Beyond clinical duties, Dr. Kwan is passionate about community engagement and advocacy though Texas Pediatric Society where she is the co-chair for the Committee on Injury Prevention. She leads efforts to promote firearm safety, car-seat education, safe sleep, and drowning prevention across the Houston metro area.
