Santosh C. Uppu, MD

Biography

Santosh C. Uppu, MBBS, is a professor of internal medicine and pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and a specialist in adult congenital heart disease and advanced cardiovascular imaging. He serves as co-director of adult congenital cardiology at UTHealth Houston Heart & Vascular and director of the Congenital Cardiology Transition Program at the Children’s Heart Institute.

Dr. Uppu completed combined residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics at Albert Einstein Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and advanced fellowship training in cardiac imaging at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is a board-certified adult congenital cardiologist.

His clinical expertise focuses on the care of children and adults with congenital heart disease, advanced cardiac imaging, and the successful transition of patients from pediatric to adult congenital cardiac care. At UTHealth Houston, he has helped expand access to specialized adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) care through outreach clinics across the Greater Houston region and Beaumont, and established multidisciplinary initiatives supporting congenital heart disease patients throughout their lifespan.

As director of the Congenital Cardiology Transition Program, Dr. Uppu developed the Cardiology Transition Clinic and helped implement an Epic-based process to identify pediatric cardiology patients who need structured transition to adult congenital heart care. His work brings together pediatric and adult cardiology, nursing, social work, imaging, and other specialties to promote continuity of care for patients with congenital heart disease.

Dr. Uppu is also deeply committed to medical education, mentorship, research, and advancing cardiovascular imaging. He has trained and mentored medical students, residents, cardiology fellows, and advanced cardiac imaging fellows and has contributed extensively to the scientific literature in congenital heart disease, cardiac MRI and CT, multimodality imaging, and adult congenital cardiology.
