The Cooley University Life Center transformed during an ordinary evening Feb. 21 into a celebration of resilience, joy, and inclusion during a one-of-a-kind Sneaker Ball Prom for children and young adults living with various chronic medical conditions.
The high-energy, free event, hosted by the General Academic Pediatrics Chronic Health-Oriented Services for Niños (CHOSeN Clinic), celebrated patients, families, and medical staff with a red-carpet entrance, dancing, games, and a spirited “sole” train line that kept the celebration moving.
“This event was truly a labor of love,” said Antionnette Bowens-Whitaker, LMSW, a case manager at the CHOSeN Clinic. “We didn’t just plan this event; we lived it. Our team went above and beyond, contributing our own resources and countless hours to create this unforgettable experience. I was able to come in to work the following week with a full tank after watching our babies and their families step with humility, dance with pride, and let their spirit shine.”
For many families, the Sneaker Ball represented more than a dance. It was a rare opportunity to participate fully in a milestone experience without fear of health-related obstacles. With the theme “Walk a Mile in My Shoes, Then Dance in Them,” the Sneaker Ball removed the barriers that often prevent patients from attending traditional school dances and social gatherings.
The evening included on-site nursing staff and a thoughtfully planned, accessible environment, allowing all attendees to focus on ability, confidence, and community rather than medical limitations.
