Medical Genetics Associate Professor and Residency Program Director Paul Hillman, MD, PhD; Associate Professor Myla Ashfaq, MS, CGC; and Professor and Division Chief Hope Northrup, MD; represented McGovern Medical School at this year’s Association of Professors in Human and Medical Genetics (APHMG) meeting (external link) held in Santa Fe, NM, May 5-7, 2026. This annual meeting focuses on the medical-genetics education of learners at all levels: medical students, medical genetics residents, and fellows in all areas of medical genetics.

Myla Ashfaq (pictured above, left) presented a poster and provided her last year of service as chair of the Genetics Course Directors (pictured above right), a group heavily involved with educating medical students about genetics. Myla also provided a presentation titled “The Practical ways to use AI to develop board-style questions” in the genetics curriculum directors break-out session.
Dr. Hillman was elected to serve on the Council for the APHMG. He also attended the session for new residency directors as he took over the director role for the Combined Pediatrics/Medical Genetics Residency Program from Dr. Northrup in September 2025. Dr. Northrup provided three invited presentations and, as the new director for the Medical Biochemical Genetics Fellowship Program, welcomed the opportunity to get more involved with the Medical Biochemical Fellowship program directors.
