Joyce P. Samuel, MD, MS

Biography

Joyce Philip Samuel, MD, MS, is a professor of pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology & Hypertension at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. An internationally recognized leader in the development and implementation of personalized (n-of-1) clinical trials, she has helped shape the field of precision therapeutics in pediatric and adolescent hypertension. Dr. Samuel also leads major efforts to understand and improve obesity-related cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents, integrating innovative research methods with clinical care.

Clinically, Dr. Samuel is board certified in general pediatrics, pediatric nephrology, and obesity medicine. She is an attending physician at UT Physicians clinics and previously at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the Harris Health system.

Dr. Samuel serves as director of the Master of Science in Clinical Research Degree Program within the Institute for Clinical Research and Learning Healthcare, where she advances learning health systems science, mentors early-stage investigators, and guides the development of research-training programs.

Dr. Samuel’s research portfolio includes multiple NIH-funded studies focused on individualized treatment strategies, novel clinical trial designs, and the intersection of hypertension, obesity, and chronic kidney disease. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and invited reviews, and her expertise is sought nationally and internationally as a speaker, advisor, collaborator, and committee member.

Dr. Samuel’s longstanding commitment to education and mentorship is reflected in her leadership within the Academy of Master Educators and her extensive mentorship of residents, fellows, faculty, and graduate students. Through the integration of precision medicine and clinical care, Dr. Samuel’s work advances evidence-based strategies to improve cardiovascular and kidney health in children, adolescents, and young adults.
