Cancer Rehabilitation

Around 2 million new cancer cases are expected in 2025 in USA. Almost 40% of the people will have a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime with the most common cancer diagnosis of breast, prostate and lung cancer.  Cancer mortality continues to decline with an increase in 5-year relative survival ad per the American Cancer Society ACS).

Cancer survivors can experience cancer and cancer treatment side effects that can affect function and quality of life. An estimate of 60-90% of the cancer patients will benefit from cancer rehabilitation.

A multidisciplinary research approach in cancer rehabilitation is a key component to advance the field, improving function and quality of life in those affected by cancer.

Areas of current research at UTHealth Houston the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation includes lymphedema, quality of life, rehabilitation interventions in head and neck cancer, patient reported outcomes, cancer related symptoms, access to care among others.
