Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury changes life in an instant, but it does not define what is possible.

Each year, nearly 18,000 people in the United States sustain a spinal cord injury, joining a growing community of individuals and families navigating life after SCI. At UTHealth Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, we are deeply committed to supporting people living with spinal cord injury from the earliest moments of care through lifelong recovery.

Through our close partnership with the region’s busiest Level I Trauma Center in the Texas Medical Center and TIRR Memorial Hermann, a nationally recognized leader in rehabilitation care, we provide specialized treatment to hundreds of individuals with newly acquired spinal cord injuries each year. Our care continues well beyond hospitalization, supporting individuals across the lifespan and resulting in thousands of patient visits annually.

This depth of clinical experience drives innovative research focused on improving function, independence, and quality of life for people with SCI. From the trauma unit to inpatient rehabilitation and throughout the full continuum of care, our mission remains constant. To expand possibilities, advance recovery, and help individuals with spinal cord injury live full and empowered lives.
