Resident Spotlight – Adams returns home for residency
Ryane Adams, MD, second-year resident at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UTHealth Houston (UTHealth Houston PM&R), has a passion for her studies in the residency program and is excited to be contributing to her home community in Houston.
Adams says she always knew she wanted to be a physician. While in high school, she attended a premed summer program. While there, she heard an inspiring story about an amputee in Africa who aspired to be a professional cyclist. After he was given a prosthetic leg, he became a great cyclist.
Hearing the story, combined with some background of how the rehabilitation process worked, Adams knew a career in PM&R was her calling.
Nearing the end of her second year of residency, Adams has decided to specialize in prosthetics and orthotics, which works with amputees. She’s also interested in managing spasticity. She feels like both of these areas have a huge influence on improving amputees’ quality of life from a functionality standpoint.
Once finished with residency, Adams would like to work in academic medicine and have a hand in training the next wave of PM&R professionals, as well as having the ability to confidently care for her patients.
Adams attended the Xavier University of Louisiana for her undergraduate studies. After that brief stay, she returned to Houston for medical school and now residency. She is excited to be working in the place she’s called home most of her life.
“I love Houston, and I feel like I’m going to be in Houston forever,” Adams said. “It’s really cool to be able to give back to a community that’s given so much and helped shaped me. It’s great to be on the other side of it and take care of such a diverse population. It’s one of those full-circle moments.”
In her spare time, Adams is a big fan of sports. She’s a fan of the Texans and Astros. She also like to play pickleball or tennis and spend her time being active and outdoors.
