Biography

Houston native Dr. Meera Avila earned her undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis and her medical degree at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, where she also completed a residency and fellowship in gastroenterology.

Board-certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Avila has been in practice since 2014. She treats all conditions related to the digestive system, including cirrhosis, colon polyps, constipation, diarrhea, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, gall bladder diseases, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hepatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and peptic ulcer disease. She treats patients of all ages and also speaks Spanish.

An assistant professor of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at McGovern Medical School, she is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology and Texas Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy.

She is married to a physician and the mother of three children. Her favorite leisure activities are travel and tennis.
