Biography

Dr. Harith Mushtaq hails from Iraq originally, He is a first-generation American. He received his medical degree from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine. He completed the general surgery residency program at the Johns Hopkins Hospital -Department of Surgery and University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, McGovern Medical School. After graduating surgical residency, he completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at McGovern Medical School.

He joined UTHealth as assistant professor in the Department of Surgery. He looks forward to providing an evidence-based medicine for his patients to achieve the desired outcomes.

Dr. Mushtaq is passionate about health care equity and empowering patients to make their own treatment decisions to maximize their quality of life. With that in mind, he is all about building partnership with his patients on their journey back to health.

Dr. Mushtaq treats patients of all ages. His clinical focus includes colon and rectal cancer, anal cancer, benign colorectal diseases (inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis), and benign anorectal diseases (hemorrhoids, peri-anal fistula, pilonidal cyst) and Fecal Incontinence.

He has a particular interest in Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery, Robotic Colorectal Surgery, Enhanced Recovery after Major Surgery, colon cancer screening for benign and malignant conditions, inflammatory bowel disease and treatment of hemorrhoidal Disease.

Dr. Mushtaq goal is to significantly impact the lives of patients suffering different surgical conditions that are oftentimes difficult to discuss. Our care summarizes the use of clinical knowledge and technical skills combined with the experience to change the patient’s quality of life and provide excellent outcome.

Dr. Mushtaq is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Texas Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Harris County Medical Society.

Outside of the hospital, he enjoys traveling, reading, swimming, cooking and spending time with his family and friends.
