Biography

Dr. Monica Sanchez Shields moved to Galveston, Texas, from Barcelona, Spain, at the age of seven. She is fluent in English and Spanish. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and graduated with a BA in psychology. She completed her medical degree from St. George’s School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. She spent her clinical years in medical school in Borough Park, Brooklyn, New York, at Maimonides Medical Center.

Dr. Shields completed both internal medicine residency and cardiovascular disease fellowship specialty training at Rutgers-UMDNJ/New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. Dr. Shields completed a second fellowship in advanced cardiovascular imaging at Mount Sinai West/St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, New York.

Dr. Shields is board-certified in cardiovascular disease medicine and echocardiography. The focus of her practice is preventive cardiology. During her training in Newark, New Jersey, Dr. Shields researched heart attack access to care and improved outcomes. As a spokesperson for the American Heart Association, she met with organizations such as The Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, city council members, and New York Times staff about heart attack awareness and prevention. In practice today, Dr. Shields helps her patients by addressing risk factors for both those with and without a prior diagnosis of heart disease.
