Biorepository of Neurological Disorders
About the Biobank
The Biorepository of Neurological Disorders, also known as the “Biobank,” is a biological specimen repository that collects and archives DNA, RNA, plasma, serum, PBMCs, cerebrospinal fluid, fecal matter, and tissue from adult patients admitted to several Memorial Hermann Hospital sites. We have a specific focus on ischemic and non-traumatic hemorrhagic stroke, dementias such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy, and other neurodegenerative diseases. In addition to patients with neurological disorders, the repository also collects samples from patients hospitalized with COVID-19, pregnant women with hypertensive disorders such as eclampsia, preeclampsia, and other conditions, ECMO patients, and a control (healthy) population. At this date, the Biobank has samples from 2980 patients (any disease/controls), 1395 neurology patients, 994 COVID-19 inpatients, and 145 pregnant women. The Biobank also follows up on COVID-19 patients to evaluate the long-term effects of COVID-19 at 3-6, 12, 24, and 36 months after patient discharge.
