Texas Comprehensive Spasticity Center

The Texas Comprehensive Spasticity Center offers comprehensive care for patients affected by cerebral palsy, spasticity, or movement disorders. Located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, we have a dedicated team of experts who see patients together in one appointment, offering convenience and their collaborative expertise. We are with patients and their families from diagnosis to treatment and surgery, if needed, and through rehabilitation, to offer the best care possible using the latest advancements in medicine.

We are dedicated to helping our patients and their families through any challenges, as we provide personalized care and the most appropriate treatments. We typically see patients between the ages of 2 and 18. For patients younger than 2, we offer consultation as necessary to help with spasticity management.

Why choose Texas Comprehensive Spasticity Center

Our multidisciplinary approach is unique in many ways, and addresses the many challenges that patients and their families face when coordinating care between multiple specialists elsewhere. One way we distinguish ourselves is through our collaborative teamwork and integrated communications. Prior to your appointment, our physicians and therapists meet to review your MRIs, hip X-rays, gait analysis reports, videos, and other details to get as thorough a picture of your condition as possible. This same group meets with you to discuss the most appropriate treatment plans, factoring in your feedback, concerns, and goals.

When it comes to treatments for spasticity, Manish N. Shah, MD, a board-certified and fellowship-trained neurosurgeon, is currently the only physician in Texas and one of just a few in the country who has been trained to perform one level conus-centered selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, also called “Park SDR.” This unique procedure, compared to multi-level laminectomy, offers better, longer-lasting improvement in motor function for patients who suffer from spastic diplegia or spastic hemiplegia.

Multiple specialties in one location

Children, who are affected by cerebral palsy or other movement disorders, can require complex and, sometimes, lifelong care from different specialists at different locations. To ease the burden of scheduling on our patients and offer convenient care, our team is made up of experts specializing in pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric neurology and pediatric physical medicine & rehabilitation. They are dedicated to helping our patients throughout their health care journey.

Through our network of health care providers, our patient coordinator can help facilitate communications between different rehabilitation providers, equipment vendors, and orthotics companies to help expedite your care.
