EMG Specialist

What is an EMG Specialist?

Neurologists who specialize in electrodiagnostic medicine have extensive training using Electromyogram (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) to diagnose, evaluate, and treat patients with nerve or muscle impairments. These EMG specialists can be certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, which requires training and clinical experience in diagnosing neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems. They also complete medical school, residencies, and fellowships that provide expertise in treating the brain, spine, and other nervous system components.

When to see an EMG Specialist

Patients may be referred to an EMG specialist if they experience muscle weakness, cramping, tingling, or numbness in their arms or legs. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis may benefit from seeing an EMG specialist. EMG specialists can also help diagnose or rule out herniated discs, nerve dysfunction, muscle dysfunction, and other conditions.

What to expect during a visit to an EMG Specialist

An EMG specialist will order testing to help diagnose your condition. During an electromyogram, a doctor will place small electrode needles into your muscle tissue to record and study the muscle activity. Your doctor may ask you to contract or relax certain muscles where you are having symptoms, or shift positions during the EMG. An audio amplifier may be used to evaluate both the appearance and sound of the electrical potential. The exam can take 30 minutes to an hour. Some muscle soreness may follow for a day or so.
