Dr. Emily Tharp specializes in movement disorders, with expertise in Parkinson’s disease, tremor, and deep brain stimulation, as well as Huntington’s disease.
Dr. Tharp graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in Spanish, after studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during her junior year.
She earned her medical degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago, followed by residency training in neurology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She completed fellowship training as the first recipient of the Edmond J. Safra Fellowship in Movement Disorders at UTHealth Houston, one of eight international academic centers chosen by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to provide a neurologist with two years of additional training and expertise in diagnosing and treating Parkinson’s and related diseases. She joined the faculty of UTHealth Houston in 2025.
Dr. Tharp’s research interests include risk factors for the development of and novel therapeutics for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. She has worked as a sub-investigator on clinical trials of new treatments for Parkinson’s disease and observational studies of Huntington’s disease.
She is an author of peer-reviewed articles on Parkinson’s disease and deep brain stimulation for post-hypoxic myoclonus and focal epilepsy, and she is a contributor to the fourth edition of the textbook “Case Files: Neurology,” published by McGraw Hill Education Medical. Dr. Tharp has presented nationally and internationally.
Collaboration with Referring Physicians
Physicians at UTHealth Houston Neurosciences engage referring physicians in the care of their patients, keeping them informed about patient progress throughout the evaluation and treatment process. After a patient’s treatment, referring physicians receive a summary and a plan for follow-up. Our physicians encourage continued communication about each patient.
