Epileptologist
What is a Epileptologist?
An epileptologist is a board-certified neurologist who specializes in treating seizures and epilepsy, a common neurological condition that affects more than 3 million Americans. The disorder may be diagnosed after a patient has two or more seizures. The disturbance in brain activity causes strange sensations and behavior, as well as possible convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness.
Patients who have complications or whose seizures are not relieved by medication may be referred to an epiletologist at the UTHealth Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. The specialized neurologist can help patients manage their seizures so that they can maintain the highest quality of life. Patients of all ages travel across the nation to visit the renowned neurologists and neurosurgeons at our Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.
What you can expect at UTHealth Houston Neurosciences
UTHealth Houston Neurosciences brings together a multidisciplinary team of board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeons, neurologists, researchers, and pain management specialists who works to help provide relief for even the most complex problems. Your team will share insights, leading to better treatment decisions and outcomes.
We first investigate nonsurgical treatment options, including medical management, pain management, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and watchful waiting. When surgery is needed, our neurosurgeons routinely employ innovative minimally invasive techniques. Throughout the treatment process, we will work closely with the doctor who referred you to ensure a smooth transition back to your regular care. While you are with us, you will receive expert care, excellent communication, and genuine compassion.
When to see an Epileptologist
If a patient’s seizures are not controlled after a few months of treatment from another neurologist, they should schedule a visit with a UTHealth epileptologist. Epilepsy patients who become pregnant or want to become pregnant should consult an epileptologist. Patients experiencing unwanted side effects from their medications or who have other conditions that affect their health also may benefit from visiting an epileptologist.
What to expect during a visit to an Epileptologist
Your epilepsy specialist will provide comprehensive care by first confirming your diagnosis and working to pinpoint the cause of your seizures before prescribing medications and using other treatments to manage the condition. Patients might be scheduled for a brief stay at our state-of-the art Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, where high-definition recordings can be taken through continuous electroencephalography (EEG). Alternatively, a stereoelectroencephalography can be inserted for up to four weeks to help neurosurgeons determine the precise location of epileptic activity. CT, MRI or PET scans may also be ordered. A personalized treatment plan will be developed.
Treatments by Epileptologist
Most epilepsy can be controlled with medication but finding the right medicine at the right dosage can be a complicated process. Your epileptologist will use your condition, symptoms, and other factors to determine a prescription. In cases when a patient isn’t symptom free with medication, our neurosurgeons can use the latest technologies for surgical treatment, including stereoelectroencephalography, laser interstitial thermotherapy, responsive neural stimulation, or deep brain stimulation. Your epileptologist will discuss a treatment plan and lifestyle modifications that will help reduce seizures and maintain your quality of life.
