Dr. Matthew Mullarkey is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon specializing in neurosurgical oncology and skull base surgery. His clinical specialties include brain tumors, skull base tumors, and spine oncology. He also has an interest in spinal degenerative and traumatic pathologies, as well as peripheral nerve conditions.

Dr. Mullarkey’s research interests include developing novel treatments for high-grade gliomas and tumors of the central nervous system with a focus on oncolytic virotherapy. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, is the author of peer-reviewed publications, and has made national and international presentations.

Dr. Mullarkey received his undergraduate training at Georgetown University with a BS in biology. He earned his medical degree at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he was a junior Alpha Omega Alpha awardee and graduated as the top-ranked student in his class. He completed residency training in neurosurgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He went on to complete fellowship training in neurosurgical oncology and skull base surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada. He joined the faculty of UTHealth Houston in 2025.

Collaboration with Referring Physicians

Physicians at UTHealth Houston Neurosciences engage referring physicians in the care of their patients, keeping them informed about patient progress throughout the evaluation and treatment process. After a patient’s treatment, referring physicians receive a summary and a plan for follow-up. Our physicians encourage continued communication about each patient.
