Pediatric Movement Disorders Center
At the UTHealth Houston Pediatric Movement Disorders Center, our mission is to give children better control of their bodies through a comprehensive and convenient approach for families of patients with cerebral palsy and other pediatric movement disorders. Located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, our multidisciplinary team of specialists coordinates care from diagnosis to treatment and surgery, if needed, and through rehabilitation, using the latest advances in medicine.
We change patients’ lives by providing a support system that coordinates responsive care with a team of neurologists, pediatric orthopedists, pediatric neurosurgeons, occupational therapists, and other specialists. Our treatment plans can help give children the chance to participate in everyday activities that their diagnosis previously made feel impossible. Children gain independence and confidence when their movement disorders are managed through our leading-edge, often minimally invasive treatments.
Eva Jane met UTHealth Houston Neurosciences pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Manish Shah after her parents had been helping her manage her spastic hemiplegia for about three years. Hear from Eva Jane’s parents and Dr. Shah about how and why they chose this treatment option, and how Eva Jane is doing now at five years old.
We treat children with a range of movement disorders, including dystonia, parkinsonism, spasticity, motor tics and Tourette’s, essential tremor, and chorea. The center helps families through their complex health care journeys, coordinating visits among all providers. We help families navigate any challenges that arise and even transition into post-pediatric care when that time comes.
Creating this center has been the passion and vision of Manish N. Shah, MD, a renowned neurosurgeon who specializes in cerebral palsy and other spasticity conditions. He is one of the few surgeons in the country trained to perform a specialized selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery, called SDR, which is known to produce longer-lasting improvements in children with spastic diplegia and spastic hemiplegia. Families praise the care, attention, and expertise he provides patients.
Ways to Give
Families’ testimonials speak to the major impact that the center has had on their child’s lives. They are so inspired that they often ask how they can give back. We are seeking donors to help offset the cost of treatment to families in need so that we can expand our mission of treating as many children as possible with our comprehensive array of services. Your generous, tax-deductible donation will be used to fuel our important work in all areas of treating, researching, and curing spasticity disorders in children.

Why choose Pediatric Movement Disorders Center
Our multidisciplinary approach is unique in many ways, and addresses the many challenges that patients and their families face when coordinating care between multiple specialists elsewhere. One way we distinguish ourselves is through our collaborative teamwork and integrated communications. Prior to your appointment, our physicians and therapists meet to review your MRIs, hip X-rays, gait analysis reports, videos, and other details to get as thorough a picture of your condition as possible. This same group meets with you to discuss the most appropriate treatment plans, factoring in your feedback, concerns, and goals.
When it comes to treatments for spasticity, Manish N. Shah, MD, a board-certified and fellowship-trained neurosurgeon, is currently the only physician in Texas and one of just a few in the country who has been trained to perform one level conus-centered selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery. This unique procedure, compared to multi-level laminectomy, offers better, longer-lasting improvement in motor function for patients who suffer from spastic diplegia or spastic hemiplegia.
Multiple specialties in one location
Children, who are affected by movement disorders, can require complex and, sometimes, lifelong care from different specialists at different locations. To ease the burden of scheduling on our patients and offer convenient care, our team is made up of experts specializing in pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric neurology and pediatric physical medicine & rehabilitation. They are dedicated to helping our patients throughout their health care journey.
Through our network of health care providers, our patient coordinator can help facilitate communications between different rehabilitation providers, equipment vendors, and orthotics companies to help expedite your care.
