Biography

Mateo G. Leon, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences and Division of Advanced Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at McGovern Medical School (UTHealth).

Dr. Leon earned his medical degree in 2012 from Universidad Internacional del Ecuador in Quito, Ecuador. Following medical school, Dr. Leon completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at McGovern Medical School (UTHealth), where he also held the position of Chief Resident.  He completed his fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (FMIGS) through the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Leon is board-certified through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) with a focus practice designation in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. His focus of interests include helping patients with chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, pelvic masses, and uterine fibroids. He specializes in complex gynecologic minimally invasive surgery, with a particular emphasis on fertility-preserving procedures, complex fibroid surgeries, and large specimen minimally invasive hysterectomy. When not working, he enjoys playing soccer, travelling, and spending time with his family.
