Areas of Interest
Research Interests
The research interests of April Crawford, PhD, include the design and implementation of policies and practices to strengthen the early childhood workforce and the development and testing of interventions that support child development in the early years. Dr. Crawford earned her doctorate from the University of Houston in Political Science and Public Policy. Using her knowledge and skills, she has devoted her career to developing and evaluating interventions and resources to improve the school-based environmental predictors of young children’s learning and development. She has developed numerous user-friendly toolkits, video-based online courses, and resources that support the dissemination and adoption of evidence-based and informed approaches outside the research setting.
Currently, Dr. Crawford directs state-funded initiatives in Texas to strengthen early childhood systems through partnerships and programs, including the statewide preschool professional development program known as Texas School Ready, the Texas Early Childhood Professional Development System (training and workforce registries), and the Texas Infant-Toddler Specialist Network. She engages in translational research focused on professional development interventions, implementation frameworks, and development and validation of classroom and child measurement tools. This includes the development of CLI Engage, an online platform that houses professional development, child assessment tools, digital curriculum, and program improvement tools that support state agencies (e.g., Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Education Agency) in ongoing program implementation, research, and dissemination efforts.
Dr. Crawford also oversees the statewide operations of the Texas Head Start State Collaborative Office and the Reach Out and Read-Texas Affiliate. In addition, she serves as the principal investigator (PI) or co-PI on over 15 grants and contracts and another 50 grants and contracts previously. She has published highly-cited articles in journals such as the Early Childhood Research Quarterly and the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology. Additionally, she served as the lead author of the Texas Core Competencies for Early Childhood Practitioners and Administrators.
