Gurur Biliciler-Denktas, MD, FACC, FASE, is a professor of pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and a nationally recognized leader in pediatric cardiology, advanced cardiac imaging, and fetal cardiology. She holds dual U.S. and Turkish citizenship and earned her medical degree from the Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. Biliciler-Denktas completed her residency in pediatric and adolescent medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, followed by multiple fellowships in pediatric cardiology and advanced echocardiography at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Mayo Clinic. Over the course of her career, she has held numerous significant clinical and administrative leadership roles. These include serving as co-director of the Fetal Cardiology Program; director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic; director of the Pediatric Echocardiography Laboratory; program director for the Pediatric Advanced Non-Invasive Cardiac Imaging Fellowship; and multiple terms as interim chief or co-chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. Her work spans high-volume clinical practice, imaging program leadership, perinatal cardiology consultation, and oversight of quality initiatives in echocardiography.
An educator and mentor at heart, Dr. Biliciler Denktas has trained generations of medical students, residents, pediatric and adult cardiology fellows, cardiac sonographers, and maternal fetal medicine trainees. She leads several signature educational programs, including the ECHO Boot Camp and weekly fellow sonographer collaborative teaching sessions.
Dr. Biliciler Denktas is also widely respected for her contributions to institutional service. She has served in extensive leadership capacities within the Faculty Senate, Interfaculty Council, Compensation Committee, and multiple professionalism and policy committees. At the UT System level, she has served on the Faculty Advisory Council, including as chair, and contributes to physician wellness initiatives across the system.
Her scholarly work includes numerous abstracts, peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, invited articles, and national and international presentations. She is a frequently invited speaker at major cardiology, echocardiography, and perinatal medicine conferences worldwide. Her academic contributions span congenital heart disease, fetal echocardiography, cardiac imaging, arrhythmias, and cardiovascular outcomes in complex pediatric patients.
Dr. Biliciler-Denktas’s ongoing research focuses on congenital heart disease, fetal cardiac imaging, tuberous sclerosis complex, faculty wellness and burnout, reflecting her dual commitment to scientific advancement and improving the culture of academic medicine.
