Biography

Kathryn Leal, MS, CGC, is a board-certified genetic counselor with expertise in rare genetic diseases, high-risk patient populations, and inpatient genetics services. She is committed to improving access to genomic care in complex health care environments and to supporting families navigating rare and often life-altering diagnoses.

Kathryn earned her Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Alabama. She has been certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) since 2018.

Her work spans both clinical care and academic contribution. She received commendation from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences for excellence in genetic counseling coursework and is the first author of a peer-reviewed publication detailing the phenotypic variability of NEK8-associated Renal-Hepatic-Pancreatic Syndrome Type 2.

Beyond her clinical responsibilities, Kathryn is active in professional service and leadership. She currently serves as Treasurer of the Texas Society of Genetic Counselors; is an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling site visitor for genetic counseling program accreditation; and contributes to the advancement of the field through her work on the National Society of Genetic Counselors Abstract Committee and the Alliance to Harmonize Standards for Psychosocial Assessment Committee.

Through both practice and advocacy, Kathryn remains dedicated to expanding equitable access to genetic services and advancing the role of genetic counselors in health care systems.
