Biography

Mona A. Eissa, MD, MPH, PhD, FAAP, FSAHM, is the Chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She is Board certified in General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, and Obesity Medicine.

Dr. Eissa earned her doctor of medicine (MD) degree from Cairo University – Faculty of Medicine in 1981. She then went on to achieve her master’s in public health (MPH) and doctor of philosophy (PhD) in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at UTHealth Houston. She began her residency in Pediatrics in 1991, followed by a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine, both at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, and became faculty at McGovern in 1996. In 2000, she founded the Pediatric and Adolescent Weight Management Program at her institution and continues to serve as medical director. She is also the medical director of the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department.

Dr. Eissa’s clinical foci are general adolescent health, obesity, PCOS, and reproductive health. Her clinical expertise also includes health care in justice-involved youth. Her research interests and publications focus on Adolescent obesity and its co-morbidities. She has participated in both population and school-based research studies. In addition, she was the site investigator of several clinical studies on antihypertension and anti-obesity medications in children and adolescents. Her published research is mostly focused on obesity and its cardiovascular co-morbidities in children and adolescents.

Dr. Eissa is a member of many professional societies, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, where she served on the executive committee of the section of Epidemiology, Public Health and Evidence (SOEPHE) for 6 years.
