Monaliza S. Evangelista, MD, is a board-certified physician dual-trained in internal medicine and pediatrics, with a specialization in pediatric hospital medicine. She currently serves as a pediatric hospitalist and associate program director for both the Pediatric Residency and Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
Dr. Evangelista earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed her combined Internal Medicine–Pediatrics residency at UTHealth Houston. During her final year, she served as Chief Resident in both internal medicine and pediatrics and stayed on for an additional year as pediatric chief resident. She earned board certification in internal medicine in 2011 and in general pediatrics in 2013. Following the recognition of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) as a pediatric subspecialty in 2018, she became board-certified in PHM in 2019, the year of the inaugural board exam.
In her clinical role, Dr. Evangelista provides comprehensive inpatient care to children — and, in select cases, adults — managing a broad spectrum of acute, chronic, and medically complex conditions at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center. Since joining the faculty in 2012, Dr. Evangelista has practiced in both hospital and outpatient settings, caring for adults and children with a wide variety of medical conditions. With the establishment of the PHM Division in 2017, she transitioned to a full-time hospitalist role, driven by her passion for caring for patients in high-acuity settings, which has long been a motivating force in her medical career.
Dr. Evangelista’s academic interests center on medical education, with particular emphasis on curriculum development, mentorship, coaching, and learner assessment. Throughout her faculty tenure, she has worked extensively with trainees across the educational spectrum. She played a key role in establishing the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship at UTHealth Houston, where she currently serves as Associate Program Director.
A widely recognized educator, Dr. Evangelista has received multiple teaching and mentorship awards in acknowledgment of her contributions to trainee development. In 2022, she was inducted into McGovern Medical School’s Academy of Master Educators in recognition of her sustained excellence in teaching and educational scholarship. She remains deeply involved in educational innovation, scholarly initiatives, and mentorship of both trainees and faculty in systems-based practice and community-responsive care.
