Kiran Kumar Mallula, MBBS, MD, MS, FAAP, FACC, FSCAI, FPICS, is an interventional and adult congenital cardiologist and the director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at the Children’s Heart Institute, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. He serves as an associate professor of Pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
With extensive training across leading international institutions, Dr. Mallula completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and an advanced interventional cardiology fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital, University of California San Diego. He also holds a Master of Science in Clinical Research from Rush University.
Dr. Mallula is widely recognized for his expertise in complex congenital and structural heart interventions, including neonatal and premature infant catheter-based procedures, hybrid cardiac interventions, and transcatheter valve therapies. He has led major advancements in catheterization programs across multiple institutions, notably establishing new service lines, implementing state-of-the-art imaging and hemodynamic technologies, and expanding access to innovative therapies such as pulmonary flow restriction, intracardiac echocardiography (ICE), and hybrid interventions for single-ventricle physiology.
A prolific academic clinician, Dr. Mallula has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, national/international presentations, and multimedia educational resources focused on congenital cardiology and interventional techniques. His research contributions span catheter based palliation strategies, outcomes of complex interventions, structural valve therapies, and multicenter registry participation including IMPACT, CRISP, and pulmonary flow restrictor registries.
Dr. Mallula maintains multiple leadership and service roles, including as a prior member of the Congenital Heart Disease Council for SCAI, a Faculty Senator at McGovern Medical School, and a reviewer or editorial board member for several major cardiology journals. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Cardiology, Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions, and the Pediatric & Congenital Interventional Cardiovascular Society. An accomplished educator, he is deeply committed to training the next generation of pediatric cardiologists, interventional fellows, residents, and medical students, with more than a decade of structured teaching, mentorship, and curriculum development.
Through his clinical leadership, research, and dedication to patient-centered care, Dr. Mallula continues to shape the evolving field of congenital and structural heart interventions improving outcomes for some of the most complex pediatric and adult congenital heart disease patients.
