Biography

Dr. Ramia Zakhour is a Pediatric Infectious Diseases physician with specialized expertise in the prevention and treatment of infections in immunocompromised children. She completed her pediatric infectious disease fellowship at UTHealth and then went on to complete a fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where she focused on managing complex infectious diseases in pediatric patients undergoing solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, as well as those with other immunodeficiencies and cancer. Her clinical and research interests center on improving outcomes for different immunocompromised pediatric populations, including transplant recipients, children with primary immunodeficiencies, and children receiving biologics and other immunosuppressive therapies, with an emphasis on evidence-based, individualized patient care.

Prevention and treatment of infections in immunocompromised pediatric patients, including solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, patients with primary immunodeficiency, patients receiving treatment for cancer, patients with other conditions requiring treatment with biologics and immunosuppressive therapies.

Research Interests

Response to vaccines in immunocompromised pediatric patients.

Disease-specific immunologic changes and their impact on risk of infection and disease prognosis in different immunocompromised pediatric populations.

Interactions between the immune system and in host evolution of pathogens, including the development of bacterial resistance over time

Novel diagnostics in pediatric ID
