Sheela Gavvala, DO, is an associate professor of pediatrics at McGovern Medical School and a double board-certified pediatric hospitalist that practices at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital- Texas Medical Center in Houston, caring for children with diverse acute and chronic medical conditions. She attended medical school at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and completed her pediatric residency at Dell Children’s Hospital/UT Austin. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine.
Dr. Gavvala’s academic interests center around social drivers of health, language access, health literacy and equitable child health policy. She serves as the co-chair of the Pediatric Residency Leadership Tracks and directs the advocacy rotation for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship. She serves as the Social Determinants of Health Sub workgroup co chair for UTHealth Houston’s Pediatric Population Health Initiative and is an active member on the Children’s Memorial Hermann Health Access and Engagement Workgroup.
Beyond UTHealth Houston, Dr. Gavvala is a non-resident fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute of Public Policy and serves on the executive committee for the Health Policy Scholars Program through the Academic Pediatric Association. She is also an active member of the Texas Pediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
