Thao L.T. Nguyen, DO, FAAP, is an assistant professor of pediatrics in the division of critical care medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin and received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He completed a combined Internal Medicine–Pediatrics residency and a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellowship at McGovern Medical School, followed by an advanced fellowship in Pediatric Neurocritical Care at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Nguyen is triple board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. His academic and research focus centers on pediatric neurocritical care, particularly in the areas of traumatic brain injury, intracranial hypertension, pediatric stroke, and brain death determination. He currently serves as site principal investigator or co-investigator on multiple multicenter research studies and is spearheading prospective projects on neuromonitoring modalities in pediatrics.
In his role as associate fellowship program director, Dr. Nguyen is actively involved in curriculum development, simulation-based education, and the scholarly mentorship of trainees. His research has been presented at national meetings and published in journals such as Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Seminars in Pediatric Neurology, and BMJ Case Reports. He has received several institutional awards, including the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award and the Educational Innovations Award, and continues to advance multidisciplinary care and education in pediatric neurocritical care.
