The back-to-school season has prompted many in the Department of Pediatrics team to venture off campus and out of clinics into the communities of Greater Houston, meeting people where they are. To learn more about energizing volunteer opportunities like these, visit the Department of Pediatrics SharePoint and click on Advocacy or contact Assistant Project Manager Clarissa Webb.
Members of the Pediatric Global Health Program recently volunteered at the BRIDGE to Health Refugee Health Fair organized by McGovern Medical School. Dr. Dalilah Reyes de Jesus (Community and General Pediatrics) organized a table of resources for families along with two Global Health Leadership Track residents, Drs. Carley Allen and Emily Leong. The event had a great turnout with lots of children who benefited from resources. The Global Health team looks forward to serving local global patients more in the future, too!
The UTHealth team hosted a Transportation Safety Station with info on car-seat safety and FREE helmets, fitted by a health care professional! “We were able to fit and give away around 340 helmets in THREE HOURS. That means on average we fit around 114 helmets an hour. … Not to mention all of the information provided at the booth about transportation safety and everything else families need to know. If we gave away 340 helmets, the number of people that our tables reached had to be so much higher,” said Dr. Melissa Kwan, who led in organizing the event.
As Dr. McKay put it, events like this are “fill your cup moments.” The more the merrier next year!
At a recent back-to-school event held at Almeda Mall, UTHealth Injury Prevention Coordinator Marisol Nieves (above, left) and Population Health Program Coordinator Tiffany Collins actively engaged with over 500+ families. They provided vital injury-prevention resources, covering topics such as car seat safety, pedestrian safety, and mental health awareness. The event ensured accessibility by offering information in both English and Spanish, helping to empower the community with essential safety knowledge.
