On September 12, the McGovern Medical School chapter of the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and the Latino American Medical Association of Houston gathered for a social event welcoming new MS1 students.
The Latino American Medical Association of Houston has a mentorship program for medical students and supports events to promote leadership and collaboration. Their current president is Pulmonary Medicine Staff Physician Maria Caldas-Vasquez, MD. “It has been a wonderful journey serving as the president of the Latin American Medical Association of Houston in the past two years, strengthening the scholarship program and making special emphasis in our mentorship program with medical students, undergraduate and high school students wanting to pursue a career in health care,” Dr. Caldas-Vasquez said.
The organization hosted a gala on October 5 where they honored Jorge Salazar, MD, Professor of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, as a distinguished Hispanic physician in academics (photo below, left) and gave away six scholarships for medical students, three of whom attend McGovern Medical School: Vilma Caballero, Andrew Lara and Alexa Cumming.
