City of Houston Recognizes National Injury Prevention Day with Proclamation

Houston Mayor John Whitmire issued a proclamation on Nov. 18, 2025, in recognition of National Injury Prevention Day and applauded the dedication of injury prevention specialists to reducing preventable injuries.

Injury Prevention specialists from across the Texas Medical Center were presented with a proclamation from the City of Houston to raise awareness on National Injury Prevention Day.

The Injury Prevention Team from Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital was joined by colleagues from their academic partner UTHealth Houston, all Level I trauma centers in Houston, and the Texas Violence and Injury Prevention Research Center (VIPR) at a special ceremony at Houston City Hall where the proclamation was announced. Together, these organizations play an essential role in educating the community on injury prevention through best safety practices.

Preventable injuries remain the number one cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. According to the city’s proclamation, injuries are a significant public health concern in Houston, where unintentional injury rates exceed both state and national averages.

“Tonight is a powerful example of what collaboration can accomplish,” said Sarah Abbott, Injury Prevention and Outreach Education Coordinator at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. “By engaging our community and sharing injury prevention messaging, we move closer to making our city safer and healthier.”
