Division name change: Community and General Pediatrics is now General Academic Pediatrics

In February 2026, the division known as Community and General Pediatrics officially became General Academic Pediatrics. This change reflects the division’s strategic evolution and better aligns their identity with their core mission in education, scholarly productivity, and academic leadership.

Historically, the name “Community and General Pediatrics” has emphasized the division’s clinical service footprint and community engagement. While these remain foundational to their work, this division has made significant academic contributions. “Our faculty lead innovative educational initiatives, produce impactful research, and foster scholarly contributions and educational leaders that advance pediatrics both locally within McGovern Medical School and nationally. Adopting the title General Academic Pediatrics will more accurately represent this broader academic scope,” said General Academic Pediatrics Division Chief Sandy McKay, MD, FAAP (pictured below).

Additionally, this change promotes consistency with name conventions used at peer academic institutions nationwide, supporting more explicit recognition in recruitment, regional partnership, and national benchmarking. It also ensures alignment with our institution’s strategic priorities, which aim to elevate academic excellence and promote professional development.

This title modification is a vital step in signaling our current and future direction, highlighting our commitment to developing the next generation of pediatric leaders and advancing knowledge that improves health outcomes for children and families.
