Thomas Spentzas, MD, MS, FAAP, is a professor of pediatric critical care medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. His journey in medicine began at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he graduated with honors in 1983. Following his service as a medical officer in the Greek Army, he dedicated his career to pediatrics, completing his residency at the University of Ioannina and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Montefiore), followed by three years of specialized training in pediatric critical care.
With more than 30 years of experience as a pediatric intensivist — including his first attending role at Columbia Presbyterian Babies Hospital and serving as PICU medical director at institutions such as Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital — he has remained committed to the highest standards of acute care.
Beyond the bedside, Dr. Spentzas’ career has been defined by a fascination with medical technology and mathematics. As a medical statistician focused on critical care ultrasound, mechanical ventilation, ECMO systems, and microcirculation, he strives to bridge the gap between complex data and clinical excellence.
Teaching remains his greatest passion. Whether serving as medical director for physician assistant programs or mentoring the next generation of physicians, Dr. Spentzas finds his greatest fulfillment in guiding young professionals toward their goals.
