Department of Surgery welcomes new Surgical Director of Pediatric Transplantation Christine Hwang, MD, MHCM, FACS
The Department of Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston is thrilled to announce the arrival of Christine Hwang, MD, MHCM, FACS, as she joins the growing faculty in the Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation.
Dr. Hwang is professor of surgery with adjunct appointments in the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Pediatric Surgery and serves as surgical director of pediatric transplantation in the Memorial Hermann Transplant Institute. Dr. Hwang joins our program after 15 years at UT Southwestern and Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, where she held numerous leadership roles in the adult and pediatric transplant programs. Her experience with pediatric transplantation began during fellowship at Stanford University, where she trained under renowned pediatric transplant surgeon Carlos Esquivel, MD, PhD, FACS. Christine recently completed a Masters in Health Care Management at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health and brings a unique combination of clinical and administrative experience to her leadership role in our program.
Dr. Hwang’s recruitment is a result of our hospital and university’s transformed approach to pediatric abdominal organ transplantation. She will lead the development of thriving pediatric liver and kidney programs which will complement our pediatric heart program, enhancing our service to children with advanced organ disease in our region and beyond. Dr. Hwang’s arrival is a critical step towards expanding the comprehensive capabilities of Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, recruiting additional expert pediatric specialists, and providing new opportunities to fulfill the training and research missions of our university.
