Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital

Memorial Hermann Hospital TMC

Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital (CMHH) is located in the Texas Medical Center, next door to the McGovern Medical School.

Our CMHH neonatal critical care services include a 118-bed Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the highest level of care available for premature and critically ill newborns, as designated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Through Memorial Hermann Life Flight®, our Level IV NICU has the ability to treat critically ill neonatal patients transferred to our Level IV NICU, one of the biggest in Texas, from community hospitals across Greater Houston.

When on inpatient service, fellows will work with the on-service attending to provide: care for all patients on Pedi Cardiology service; consultations to Pedi Cardiology service; and all in-patient procedures such as electrocardiograms, Holters, exercise tests and transthoracic echocardiograms. These originate from the 100-bed NICU, step-down nursery, 20-bed Pediatric ICU, 80-bed General Pediatric Service, Pediatric Surgery Service, and Pediatric Subspecialties (e.g. Nephrology, Pulmonary).

The fellow will:

    • Supervise fourth-year elective students and pediatric residents and have ultimate responsibility for all patients to train in task management. The attending will guide and supervise the fellow.
    • Perform cardiac catheterization procedures (diagnostic, electrophysiology and interventional) while directly supervised by the Interventional Pediatric Cardiologists and Pediatric Electrophysiologist, as appropriate.
    • Participate in obtaining and interpreting transesophageal and fetal echocardiograms under direct supervision of Pediatric Cardiology attendings that specialize in echocardiography.

The CMHH PICU is home to the Children’s Heart Institute Intensive Care Unit (CICU), a co-horted unit specifically for patients with critical congenital heart defects requiring surgery, cared for by a medical team with special training and expertise. The affiliated team of cardiac intensivists, cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses and respiratory therapists work in unison to deliver specialized care, speed recovery, and relieve pain for all patients.
