Fellowship
Overview
Our fellowship program is set within one of the largest medical centers in the world. Our primary clinical sites provide care to adolescents from underserved populations with a variety of acute and chronic illnesses. Our faculty staff four detention facilities where fellows see a large volume of patients; fellows also have a dedicated continuity clinic within the medical center in addition to an adolescent clinic at one of the county hospitals. Fellows have an opportunity to obtain either a master in public health or clinical science and have protected time during the fellowship to accomplish this. Our faculty and former fellows have been very successful in conducting research, publishing manuscripts and obtaining grant funding. Our program has a very strong primary care focus, but also the flexibility to allow fellows to find their niche within the field.

International Medical Graduates
The only sponsored training visa is the J-1 visa. We do not work with or sponsor any other visas. IMPORTANT: You must have a valid ECFMG certificate before applying to our fellowship program. Required Document List: If you are asked to interview, two certified notarized copies (with notary stamp and signature on every page) will be reviewed by our fellowship coordinator on your interview day, following a check-list provided by our GME Office. Should you match with our program, one complete set of certified notarized copies will be forwarded to our GME Office to work-up your fellowship contract and orientation packet and the other copy will stay in our fellowship office file.
The School of Public Health Scholarship for Pediatric Fellows
This competitive scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, will be awarded to pediatric fellows who are pursuing, or plan to pursue, a degree at the University Of Texas School Of Public Health. It will be awarded to one or a few individuals who are judged by the scholarship committee to be the best qualified of the applicants.
The scholarship committee includes the following members of the Department of Pediatrics, University of Texas Medical School at Houston:
- Dr. Gloria Heresi, Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease
- Dr. Mona Eissa, Director, Division of Adolescent Medicine
- Dr. Michael Yafi, Director, Division of Endocrinology
The criteria for receiving the scholarship include:
- Evidence of promise for success in research, as evidenced by previous accomplishments
- Letters of recommendation from the scholarship applicant’s fellowship application
- Evaluations from clinical rotations while a fellow, if any
- Letters of recommendation from the fellow’s Division Director
- Assessment of the applicant’s motives and suitability for pursuing a degree at the School of Public Health, evaluated by an interview with the Scholarship Committee
Fellowship applicants will be made aware of the scholarship in the online and paper information that they receive about the fellowship, and again via online and paper notification once they are accepted into the program. Continuing fellows will receive information by paper and email notification in the fall of their first year, and the program will be discussed at the monthly Fellow’s meetings of that year.
