Extra Curricular and Community Health

The Department of Pediatrics aims to produce well-rounded pediatricians who have empathy and understanding for the many situations their patients face. Additionally, UTHealth Houston offers training that is readily applicable in high-pressure emergencies. Our faculty are involved in the development of programs that offer these experiences and more.

Community Action Poverty Simulator (CAPS)

Started by Associate Professor Sandy McKay, MD, FAAP, and now led by Assistant Professor Monica Kodakandla, MD, the Community Action Poverty Simulator (external link) is a live-action and interactive experience where participants role-play as individuals living in low-income families. The simulator provides participants with the opportunity to enrich their education by navigating how to pay for health care while balancing their family’s bills and responsibilities. For four 15-minute “weeks,” each simulator family is tasked with maintaining their life’s necessities in whatever way they think is best.

Mass Casualty Incident Simulation

Hosted by the Center for Interprofessional Collaboration (external link), the Mass Casualty Incident Simulation depicts the aftermath of a fictional event with numerous casualties. Faculty and staff portray victims with varying degrees of injury, testing students’ ability to assess wounds, provide first aid, and manage patient care under pressure. Associate Professor Ann Marshburn, MD, serves on the Advisory Council that organizes this high-impact training event.
