Biography

Dr. Emma A. Omoruyi, MD, MPH, is a professor of pediatrics and the Program Director of the Pediatric Residency Program at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. A nationally recognized leader in medical education and health equity, Dr. Omoruyi has dedicated her career to advancing pediatric training, mentorship, and community health.

She earned her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her pediatric residency and chief residency at McGovern Medical School, where she has since risen through the academic ranks to full professorship.

Dr. Omoruyi is a passionate educator and mentor, having received numerous accolades, including the University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, the Academic Pediatric Association’s National Mid-Career Faculty Teaching Award, and induction into the National Academy of Distinguished Educators in Pediatrics. She has developed and led multiple innovative educational programs, including the Advancing Inclusiveness in Medical Education Scholars (AIMS) program, and has served as a mentor to dozens of medical students and residents.

Her scholarly work focuses on medical education, diversity and inclusion, and pediatric health disparities. She has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has presented extensively at national and international conferences. Dr. Omoruyi also serves on editorial boards and national committees, including the Academic Pediatric Association and the Association of Pediatric Program Directors.

Clinically, she serves as medical director of the Cleveland E. Odom Pediatric and Adolescent Comprehensive Care Clinic and maintains active roles in newborn and inpatient pediatric care. Her leadership in quality improvement, curriculum development, and advocacy continues to shape the future of pediatric health care and education.
