Biography

Syed Shahrukh Hashmi, MD, MPH, PhD, is a professor of pediatrics and director of the Bioinformatics Core in the Department of Pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, where he has served on the faculty since 2008. His academic trajectory at UTHealth Houston includes appointments as assistant professor (2008–2015), associate professor (2015–2022), and professor (2022–present), reflecting a sustained record of scholarship and institutional service. Trained as a physician at Albert Szent‑Györgyi Medical University in Szeged, Hungary (MD, 1998, cum laude), he went on to earn an MPH (2003) and PhD in epidemiology (2008) from The University of Texas Houston School of Public Health, building a foundation that bridges clinical pediatrics, epidemiology, education and data‑driven discovery.

Dr. Hashmi’s research spans birth‑defects epidemiology, craniofacial genetics, pediatric outcomes across various disciplines in pediatrics, and translational bioinformatics. His publication record includes well over 120 peer‑reviewed articles covering pediatrics, maternal-fetal health, genomic medicine, genetic counseling and medical education. His collaborative portfolio also extends to population and precision‑health investigations, e.g., exome and candidate‑gene work in childhood‑onset essential hypertension, underscoring a career at the interface of clinical questions and rigorous quantitative methods.

A dedicated educator and mentor, Dr. Hashmi coordinates and teaches graduate courses in genetic‑counseling research methods and has supervised a large cohort of trainees across medical, graduate, and undergraduate levels. He has held key leadership roles, serving on and chairing various committees and workgroups at the Department of Pediatrics, McGovern Medical School, and UTHealth Houston. He also represented UTHealth Houston on the UT System Faculty Advisory Council (2018–2020) and was inducted into the UTHealth Houston Academy of Master Educators in 2016. His professional service includes editorial board work, membership in the Society for Pediatric Research (inducted 2021), and community leadership with the South Asian Public Health Association and The Health Museum in Houston, commitments that reflect his focus on advancing science, education, clinical care, and inclusive excellence.
