Thalassemia

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder which causes severe anemia due to ineffective erythropoiesis. People born with the severe form of thalassemia usually require regular blood transfusions and careful monitoring to lead healthy lives.  UTHealth Pediatric hematologists provide care for children with thalassemia through coordination of services Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center and clinic in UT Physicians Practice Plan.  We collaborate with the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation to provide data establishing guidelines for management of transfusion-dependent thalassemia and monitoring of iron chelation therapy.
