How to Stay Safe

Target Safety was built to reduce firearm tragedies. This team effort raises awareness of Texas-based retailers who offer temporary firearm storage and teaches our communities the importance of storing firearms securely.

At UTHealth Houston, our specific focus is to educate community members and leaders on the importance of secure storage in preventing harm. The research of Sandra McKay, MD, and other multidisciplinary experts provides valuable data that supports positive change. We collaborate with several organizations to connect firearm owners to temporary out-of-home storage, such as:

• Pierce’s Pledge (external link), a non-profit that seeks to keep children safe during the stressful and emotionally volatile time of custody disputes, has developed an interactive map (external link) that shows safe firearm storage locations across the country.
• The Armory Project (external link) provides voluntary, temporary out-of-home firearm storage options through trusted partners in local communities.

Temporary firearm storage is helpful for a number of reasons:

• Is someone in your home feeling low?
• Are you going out of town and need a safe place to store firearms for a week or two?
• Are you having young visitors and want to have a safe place to hold guns for a weekend?

Whatever the situation, it is best to be safe.
