Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Welcome!

The three-year, ACGME-accredited Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive clinical training, progressive leadership development, and robust scholarly opportunities. The curriculum includes approximately 18 months of clinical rotations and 15 months of dedicated research time, allowing fellows to develop expertise in the care of critically ill children while pursuing meaningful academic and scholarly endeavors. Fellows receive three weeks of vacation annually, along with an additional week off through a structured holiday schedule, supporting personal wellness and work-life balance throughout training.

Clinical training is centered in the Children’s Memorial Hermann Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (external link) (PICU), a quaternary pediatric referral center and Level I Trauma Center where fellows gain broad exposure to complex medical, surgical, neurologic, and trauma-related critical illness. Clinical rotations are organized into one-week blocks and include PICU day service, PICU night float, stepdown ICU, and cardiovascular ICU experiences.

Fellows receive specialized training in pediatric cardiac critical care through rotations in the Children’s Memorial Hermann Pediatric Heart ICU (external link) and additional exposure to advanced cardiopulmonary therapies through the Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (external link) as part of the Advanced Cardiopulmonary Therapies and Transplantation team managing patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist devices (VADs), and other forms of mechanical circulatory support. Fellows also rotate with the pediatric anesthesia team to develop advanced airway management and procedural sedation skills. Additional elective opportunities are available in pediatric critical care transport medicine, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), pediatric cardiac critical care, and pediatric anesthesia, allowing fellows to tailor their training to individual interests and career goals.
