Year-Round Mentoring
Mentoring is an integral part of medical education at McGovern Medical School. Though many of our programs may not have a stated mentoring component, connection and guidance are a part of the culture in the Department of Pediatrics. We are pleased to be a part of campus-wide efforts for medical students as well as department-wide efforts for residents, fellows, and faculty.

L-R: Professor Amalia Guardiola, MD, (row 1, 1st on right) serves as a McGovern Society mentor, connecting with students beyond the clinical space.
McGovern Society Advisory Program
The McGovern Society Advisory Program supports student self-care, wellness, and resilience while strengthening a lasting culture of community across McGovern Medical School. Housed in the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs and separate from graded coursework, it provides confidential, longitudinal mentoring and a safe space to discuss medical education and the hidden curriculum without academic consequences. Each Society includes 8 to 10 students led by a carefully selected clinical faculty advisor and supported by peer mentors, with required noon meetings and additional specialty advising during the third and fourth years. Professor Amalia Guardiola, MD, and Associate Professor Veronica Gonzalez, MD, FAAP, facilitate this program for the Department of Pediatrics and serve as mentors.
