Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship

Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship (ACGME-accredited)

Welcome from the Program Director – Christopher Falco, MD

Christopher Falco

Brain Injury Medicine is a new subspecialty board certification under the ABPMR in cooperation with the ABPN.  The new subspecialty was created due to the increased diagnosis and treatment options for patients with acquired brain injuries. UTHealth Houston PM&R has the highest number of board-certified Brain Injury Medicine specialists within one institution in United States.

Our Brain Injury Medicine fellowship is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program to prepare physiatrists for the comprehensive management of patients with acquired brain injury. The fellowship is administered in collaboration with the Baylor College of Medicine PM&R department and director Dr. Sunil Kothari, MD.

TIRR Memorial Hermann, the primary teaching hospital of the fellowship program, is a national leader in both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation.  Our rehabilitation hospital lends itself to training the highest quality brain injury physicians.  The fellow rotates in both inpatient and outpatient settings with physiatrists from TIRR’s Brain Injury and Stroke Program, as well as neuropsychologists, researchers, neuropsychiatrists, and therapists.

Fellows participate in consultation services at Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center, the nation’s largest Level I trauma center, including rounds in intensive care and stroke units.

There is ample opportunity for research in collaboration with world-renowned Brain Injury Medicine specialists Dr. Gerard Francisco and Dr. Sheng Li, who participate in clinical research with multiple R0-1 grants and extensive collaborations with industry.

Apart from extensive clinical diversity, another highlight of our program is the extensive training in procedural spasticity management and intrathecal baclofen pump management. Rounding out the curriculum are extensive didactics, popular journal clubs, and teaching opportunities for fellows interested in academic medicine.
