Program Overview
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at UTHealth offers a 3-year ACGME accredited training designed to prepare individuals for careers in clinical, academic, or research track careers. Residents have opportunities to care for patients and pursue scholarly activity at many teaching institutions—MD Anderson Cancer Center, The Michael DeBakey Veteran’s Affairs Hospital, Harris Health, and Memorial Hermann Hospital (MHH). Residents participate in quality improvement and patient safety activities at all institutions, each with its own unique patient population and research emphasis, in addition to providing clinical care. Our program employs block scheduling to protect time for scholarly activities and features a robust faculty-led didactic curriculum. Residents develop teaching skills while working with medical students on general medicine ward teams, and their contributions help make our third-year internal medicine clerkship the most highly rated by students. We are proud to provide clinical experiences, mentorship, and didactics to support our residents in whatever career they decide to pursue, whether it is hospital medicine, primary care internal medicine, or subspecialty fellowship.
Mission Statement
Our Internal Medicine Residency program is committed to excellence, lifelong learning, and caring for our community. We challenge residents to take leadership in medical student education and scholarly activity while providing exceptional clinical care. We recruit and train physicians who reflect the diversity of our city and share our resolution to serve our patients regardless of their social circumstances.
