Internationally Renowned Otolaryngologist to Speak at 2012 ORL Frontiers

Brian Nussenbaum, MD, FACS, will be the featured speaker at 2012 Otorhinolaryngology Frontiers, an annual CME event that highlights research endeavors and emerging technology in the diagnosis and management of common otolaryngologic clinical problems.  Dr.  Nussenbaum is the Christy J. and Richard S.  Hawes III Associate Professor of Otolaryngology, vice chair for clinical affairs, patient safety officer and co-director of the fellowship program in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction in the department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St.  Louis.

Dr.  Nussenbaum’s clinical areas of focus include head and neck neoplastic disease, reconstructive head and neck surgery and salivary gland surgery including sialendoscopy.  His current clinical research interests include defining quality metrics for the care of head and neck cancer patients.  His basic science research focuses on the bone morphogenetic protein-signaling pathway as it relates to oral cancer.

Dr.  Nussenbaum received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency in otolaryngology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.  He went on to pursue a two-year fellowship in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery at the University of Michigan.  In 2009, Dr.  Nussenbaum completed the Patient Safety Officer Executive Development Program at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

He has authored more than 40 publications and book chapters and is a frequent invited lecturer and presenter around the country.  He is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American College of Surgeons and the American Head and Neck Society.  Dr.  Nussenbaum is a reviewer for several clinical and basic science journals and is a member of the editorial board for the Contemporary Reviews section of Laryngoscope.  He has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards throughout his career, including an Honorable Mention for Basic Science Research from the Triological Society for his thesis entitled Differential Effects of Preoperative Versus Postoperative Radiation on Ex Vivo Gene Therapy Directed Osteogenesis.  He received the Teacher of the Year Award in the Department of Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine in 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2011.  Dr.  Nussenbaum has been listed in Best Doctors, Inc.  every year since 2007.
