More than 75 physicians from around the world participated in ORL Frontiers second virtual event, sponsored by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. Held June 18, 2021, the department research event highlights emerging data in the diagnosis and management of common otolaryngologic clinical problems and the research productivity of members of the department.
Ira Papel, MD, an internationally recognized expert in rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, and facial aesthetic surgery, was the guest of honor at the event. Dr. Papel is a clinical professor of otolaryngology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and co-director of the Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he is actively involved in the surgical training of medical students, residents, and fellows. He has served as an invited visiting professor at more than 40 universities in the United States, Europe, Asia, Mexico, and South America. His textbook, Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, now in its fourth edition, has become a standard text for surgeons throughout the world. Dr. Papel, who spoke on “Reconstruction versus Preservation in Modern Rhinoplasty: Where is the Balance?,” was selected by otorhinolaryngology residents from a list of possible speakers.
ORL Frontiers course directors were Tang Ho, MD, chief of facial plastic surgery in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and director of the Texas Center for Facial Plastic Surgery at McGovern Medical School, Katherine Kao, MD, assistant professor of otorhinolaryngology at McGovern Medical School, and Amber Luong, MD, PhD, professor and vice chair for research in the department.
